Are you hosting friends and family this 4th of July? Maybe you're looking for a few simple ways to up the patriotic quotient at your shindig? Here's a quick and easy patriotic tablescape I put together, using items I already had on hand around the house.

After scrounging around in our kitchen cabinets, dining room hutch, and buffet, I realized I have a pretty substantial assortment of red, white, and blue tableware on hand, largely due to having items that complement our red dining room and navy blue outdoor umbrella.

After some thought, I decided upon a tablescape style I like to call "formal al fresco." It's a combination of using nice dinnerware and glassware (no paper napkins, or plastic cups or cutlery here), but it's set for a relaxed outdoor dining experience. I settled on using:

Ho-lee crap. After suffering through a day of 103 degree (that's 110 heat index) weather, the massive wind and thunder storms that ripped through the mid-Atlantic made their way to Alexandria at roughly 10:30pm, and their presence was undeniable. As the winds started to pick up and we watched the big red blog on the radar descend on the DC metro region, we knew we were in for a doozy. Luckily we had the foresight to prepare by lowering our patio umbrella and hastily remove the 4th of July buntings from the front of our home.

With just seconds to spare, the storm hit full force, bringing hurricane-force winds and driving rain. We watched from our bedroom windows as our new curbside tree was bent to a 45 degree angle from the winds. We held our breath, hoping it wouldn't be uprooted and sent sailing down our street. As we were watching the scene unfold outside, the driving rain brought a steady stream of water pouring in through our window sash. As I pulled back the curtains, Alex ran for paper towels while cursing the fact he hadn't finished the new storm windows. Lulu lazily watched the scene unfold.

We fought the battle against the rain for roughly an hour. A roll of paper towels and some elbow grease later, we're happy to report were able to keep the water from damaging any of the plaster, shutters, floor, or curtains.

Best of all, after the storm blew through, the temperature had dropped some 20-30 degrees. I dozed off with lightening flashing in the distance while Alex trolled Twitter for information on the Amazon Web Service outage that was affecting Instagram, Netflix, Pinterest, Reddit, and other major websites. It was all caused by the same storm, and he's a big nerd like that, so he was having his own little fun.

When we awoke this morning, we quickly realized we were one of the lucky few still with power. More than 2 million people in the area are without due to the storm, and temperatures are expected to reach nearly 100 again today. As a result, Alexandria has declared a local emergency. Four storm-related deaths have been reported in the area.

We did a survey of our yard and surrounding homes. Our back yard had a lot of leaves, branches, and debris that required cleanup, but we're happy to report no damage.

Just outside our back wall, we discovered that our garbage can as well as a neighbor's had been tossed about.

Last week we gave you all a little glimpse into the first several steps of our home office renovation project, as well as the injury I suffered that threw a major wrench into our plans. But once I healed up and jumped back on the DIY horse, we still had a TON of work to get cracking on to give us a home office. I'll tell you one thing for sure, when you're sitting around in a sling while the house has work to be done, it gets old really fast.

Though we had completed the walls and ceiling, we had some serious issues facing us with the wood floor. The old oak flooring had been covered for many years by tile applied over plywood. But besides a little water damage in a spot or two, the flooring that was still there looked to be in pretty decent shape. Unfortunately, there was a large strip that had been cut out at some point, and we're still not sure why. You can see the large section of missing flooring on the right side of this photo.

In the above photo, I had already started removing boards near the cut so that we could properly patch the area in a way that would fix the floor without drawing attention to the fact it had been fixed. After all, as bad luck would have it, the strip of flooring was missing across the boards, so this required us to take the time and effort to remove end boards individually in order to weave in new flooring.

To accomplish a seamless patch, I removed boards from the cut back to their natural ends in a more or less random manner. This would allow us to cut individual boards that would go all of the way to the wall, giving the appearance that the floor had never had sections removed.

Apparently I always wear sandals when working on the house. This is quite poor form.

Summer cookouts and 4th of July parties are upon us, and I'm always looking for that perfect and simple appetizer or side that I can serve to guests. Quite honestly, at this time of year, it's hard to beat anything that gets presented as red, white, and blue.

I suspect it's no coincidence that one of the things I enjoy most about this time of year is the bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables, specifically blueberries and strawberries. It's really just perfect timing that these blue and red berries come into peak season just in time for 4th of July celebrations. And as many enjoy doing, I like to sieze convenient opportunities to color coordinate my snacks with the holiday we're going to be celebrating. What can I say, I'm a bit obsessive this way.

Last year I tried my hand at creating festive 4th of July cupcakes. They sure were a crowd pleaser, and the fireworks toppers go down in my book as an all time favorite. (Details on how I made them can be found here.)

In addition, I'm sure we've all seen the cool whip and berry topped jell-o mold of years past, decorated to look like an American flag.

In recent years I've also seen layer cakes carefully sculpted so that cross sections look quite patriotic. So cool, but very labor intensive.

All of these options look great, but can take a lot of time to make. This year I wanted to try something a little different, and put together a lightening fast, easy, and healthy treat that can be served as breakfast, a snack, or a refreshing side dish/appetizer. What I'm making you can honestly call the "perfect" treat because it is a fruit and yogurt parfait.

This simple dish requires just four ingredients and takes only a minute or two to put together.

We've been getting a few questions from readers on how our garden is growing. For those of you new to Old Town Home, we're self-proclaimed "black thumbs" when it comes to our skills in this area, but despite a lack of gardening talent or experience, we haven't given up yet.

Earlier this spring we turned our attention to replanting our cast iron urns as well as completely overhauling the small area surrounding our new city tree. This small dirt patch was largely ignored and desperately in need of attention. After days of backbreaking work to remove the roots of the diseased tree that had been removed, we were ready for planting. Here's how the area looked right after we finished getting the plants into the ground.

Now a full two months later, I'm thrilled to report that all nine new plants plus the tree are thriving. Despite the recycling man's best attempts to thwart our efforts by flinging our bin at them each Monday, we haven't lost one yet!

Here's a wider angle view to show just how well the tree and other plants are starting to do.
