Raise your hand if you're obsessed with Pinterest.
Shoot. I can't see you. But rest assured I have my hand elevated enthusiastically in the air. Last week, while being sucked into the vortex that is this virtual pinboard, I came across one photo in particular that really resonated with me. In fact, it made me stop in my tracks and say, "What a simple, yet brilliant idea!"
Here's a look at the photo that gave me pause, which I quickly pinned to my "great idea" board.
I'm a self proclaimed neat freak, but the area I tend to be a bit more flexible on tidiness is when it comes to closets and drawers. I suppose I'm guilty of the "out of sight, out of mind" mentality, and my closet is no exception.
While it's largely organized, once I get a little lazy and the first item goes back into the wrong location or into my closet a bit askew, it's downhill from there. I've noticed recently with my ever-growing scarf collection, that I've begun to run out of room. Here's an unedited, unstraightened look at my closet and the mound of scarves jammed between clothing.
My scarf storage solution up to this point was to simply wrap my scarves around the top of a hanger, treating the hanger itself like the neck and shoulders of a person. This method worked for a while, until the quantity of scarves grew too great (a special thanks to Alex for this lovely photo).
Recently I noticed that the hook of the hanger had actually pierced my new, favorite polka dot scarf purchased on my birthday trip to Napa.
Frustrated and disgusted with myself, I knew enough was enough, and it was time to make my Pinterest inspiration a reality.
While on an errand run to my local Target, I strolled on over to the bath supplies aisle and found exactly what I was looking for.
For a mere $1.19, I was the proud owner of 12 new clear plastic shower rings, perfect as the new storage solution. They had a much larger selection of nicer looking (and much more expensive) metal versions, but I wanted to stick with plastic to avoid any more scarf "puncture wounds." The plastic should be smooth enough, and therefore snag and puncture free.
Once home, and armed with the new hooks and an existing hanger, I got to work and had the plastic rings snapped on in less than 60 seconds.
Next up, I quickly organized my scarves by color.
I threaded a scarf through each ring, and I quickly realized why the Pinterest photo showed this project using a wood hanger. The weight of 12 scarves is simply too much for a plastic hanger to support.
After snagging a wood hanger from Alex's closet, I quickly transferred the rings and scarves over and voila, I'm now the proud new owner of an organized scarf storage solution.
Wow, for an investment of about two minutes and roughly $1.25 with tax, I now have organization back in this area of my closet, and I'm not worried about future damage to my neck-warming accessories. It was such a simple fix, I can't believe I didn't think of it before.
