Back in May I touched on unique ways to commemorate special occasions, specifically citing a house near ours that has a one-of-a-kind method of seasonal decorating: dressing up llamas. In May, the featured occasion was Mothers' Day, for which the llamas opted to don male and female outfits, complete with a baby in a sling (for her) and a top hat and handlebar moustache (for him). Here's a snapshot of the scene for anyone who missed it.

Well, my favorite furry friends are back, celebrating the World Cup no less. Centered in the middle of this home's picture window is this current sight:

One of the best parts of this funky llama art is the unpredictable nature in which the owners select the featured holidays. Alex and I were dying for the 4th of July to come, only to be crushed when no llamas were sighted. But surprise, surprise. It was the Women's World Cup tournament of all things that brought the llamas out onto their fashion runway in patriotic and sporty garb. Love it.

In my book, this is one of the most memorable and unique forms of holiday decorating I've come across. Does anyone have something that tops dressed up llamas in the front window? Any guesses as to the next holiday the llamas will celebrate? Your guess is as good as ours, but we'll be sure to keep you posted on any sightings in the near future. When is arbor day anyway?

For this week's Toolbox Tuesday post I want to cover a tool that took a previously intimidating job and turned it into something that anyone can handle. The tool in question, the Fletcher Terry Glass Cutter with carbide wheel, isn't terribly expensive, but does the job that any high end glass cutting system can do.

I've been doing a lot of glass cutting over the last week while getting the new front french doors ready. It's a lot of measuring and patience, but I'm no longer intimidated by the process, thanks to this high quality glass cutter.

Old and wavy glass is a fragile and expensive thing to make mistakes with. Our previous glass cutters had steel wheels that dulled quickly and were difficult to keep a reliable line when scoring the glass. After making mistake after mistake, I got to the point where I was almost afraid to cut glass, expecting it to shatter or produce a piece too small for what I was working on.

That all changed when I bought this Fletcher Terry Glass Cutter with a Carbide Wheel. The wheel is sharp and lasts up to 10 times longer than a steel wheel, the weight of the tool is balanced and heavy with a ball tip that you can use to encourage breaking with slight taps, and the ergonomic finger position makes it easy to get a reliable grip, which is very important when trying to maintain a line against a straight edge. Now I actually quite enjoy the glass cutting process.

Now it's as easy as: measure, mark, score, snap! And you're left with a cleanly cut piece of glass that is ready for your project.

Over the last week, as a dome of heat swallowed much of the country, I couldn't help but think that Nelly got it right with his song "Hot in Herre." In Alexandria, with the temperature topping out at 105°, and a heat index approaching 120°, you can imagine my joy when I realized that outdoor condenser for our air conditioner had stopped running.

This may sound like a pretty cut and dry situation where the air conditioner goes out on the hottest day of the year, but that's only a small part of the story.

Flashback...

Back when Wendy and I bought our house in 2003, we purchased "peace of mind" with a home warranty service that covered all major appliances and utilities. To us, this concept soon soured as we realized, after the first few calls for issues with our HVAC (both furnace in the winter and AC in the summer), the goal of the home warranty was to fix small issues that just happened to cost exactly the same as the $100 deductible, and to make large issues go away so they didn't need to cover the big stuff until absolutely necessary.

As temperatures in our nation's capital reach a balmy 100 degrees again today, the #DCusedtobeaswampsoitsmiserable feeling really starts to creep in. It's days like today that I totally wish we had an in-ground pool. Unfortunately, city living means small yards, and small yards mean no pools unless you can afford one of the giant homes with large yards. Sadly, we can't.

Yesterday, while at Target, I decided we needed to have a little fun on these hot days and I wasn't going to simply leave pool ownership to the wealthy few in Old Town Alexandria. So I decided to pick up a "Party Pool" (with cup holders). Why? Because it's always a party in our backyard, and I think it's high time we added a pool to the mix.

This morning, after Alex and I got our chores done (laundry, water flowers and garden, weed) and tortured ourselves with a morning run (I swear I almost didn't make it), we started to set up our party pool. I laid out a few blankets as a bit of padding for under the pool (we'll get some interlocking squares the next time we're at Lowes).

Over the last few weeks we've been talking about some of the places to eat and snack around Old Town that, in our opinion, make Old Town totally awesome. We mentioned Pops for old fashioned ice cream, and quite honestly there are probably four or five other places where you can pick up your choice of hand dipped, soft serve, yogurt (either tangy or sweet), custard, or sundaes. However, Wendy and I have long been saddened by the lack of one of our most favorite things...gelato!

Flash back to THE YEAR TWO THOUSAND (said in Conan O'Brien style) with me. Wendy and I took a trip with my parents to Rome, Venice, and Sardinia. I had been to Rome once prior to that, and had talked non-stop to Wendy about the wonders of Italian gelato. When she went back with me, I introduced her to my foreign friend and it's creamy and sweet goodness, and she too was hooked. We ate gelato three, and sometimes four meals per day. We were known to skip dinner to just eat gelato. No joke! We even had some at Tres Scalini in Rome's Piazza Navona, supposedly the best place in the world to get it. In our opinion it was just as good as anywhere else, but they wouldn't let us sit in their outdoor seating. Eh? Italians, what are ya gonna do?

Anyhow, we're obsessed with gelato. Get the drift?

Well, there is this building on King St. that was once a hair salon, then had a fire a few years ago, and then sat vacant for a very long time. A few months back I started to notice some construction taking place to get the building in shape. I had high hopes, and those hopes were realized back in April when I learned that Boccato Gelato would be opening in that location.

Boccato Gelato & Espresso is an Arlington, VA based shop that is well known and well liked by the locals and has been expanding a bit recently. Obviously my interest is in their gelato choices, but they are also an espresso bar and hang out area. Their name pretty much says it all.

Much to my excitement, Boccato officially opened it doors two days ago, amidst the Heatpocalypse of 2011.

I was walking down King St. on the way home from work today, suffering from the 104 degree but feels like 120 degree weather and thought to myself "You know, this is a perfect time for a quick sampling of Old Town's newest sweet offering." Though the exterior is yet to receive its signage (I'm sure it's coming, just getting city approval), the building itself is quite fun and inviting. However, the real treat is when you walk in the front door and are greeted by the glass case of colorful and decorated gelato.
