Jump to 1:05am update

Yep, that's right. As has been tradition for the last few years, any "real" or forecasted snow storm in the DC metro region needs a catchy name. Snowpocalypse, Snowquester, and Snowmageddon were classics in recent years, so this time around we're blazing the trail and are coining this potential snow storm...

"Snowlycrap!"

The image should auto update every 5 seconds.

We're keeping our fingers crossed that we have snow that rivals the 2010 storm shown below, though we know it's highly unlikely and we'll probably see 3"-6", tops. As we've done in previous years, we're celebrating the potential for snow by setting up our webcam in our front window so you can all see how much (or little) snow we actually get.

Like any good Midwesterner transplant I look forward to the possibility of snow, even if over-hyped by the local news stations. That being said, the whole rest of the region tends to generally freak out, buying up all of the bread, milk, and toilet paper in the stores. They then drive erratically through the snow, both well above a safe operating speeds and at a pace that would make the Slowskis proud.

Yes, that's right, we're over-hyping the chance for 3"-6" of snow in order to ensure we're horribly disappointed by the ultimate outcome. As the event progresses be sure to drop in and get a live look from our front window. If it's actually some decent snow we might even venture out for some of the beautiful but rare Old Town snow photography and rambunctious puppy frolicking. Almost nothing makes us happier.

Another great example of the 2010 storm.

What do you think? Will be get a good boom form this storm or will it be a classic DC metro region bust?

4:45am Update

SNOW DAY! SNOW DAY!

In a move that's sure to lead to a potential bust, Federal Government in DC have closed for the day due to the coming storm! Though nothing has started to fall in the area, this puts the hype up to 11. Come on snow! Don't let me down!!!

9:45am Update

It saddens me to say this, but it's looking like a bust. We'll likely not even reach the 2" mark. So lame.

1:05pm Update

Bust!

Weather forecasts in this area are so fragile. One area might be getting slammed and you move just a few miles to the south or east and you've got a whole different setup and result. Seems the case here. Our potential 6" of snow has turned into a sloppy mess leaving nothing but slushy roads and messy sidewalks. We ventured out to pick up a few necessities and enjoyed a few of the fatter flakes that were falling.

Here's to keeping our fingers crossed that we'll get something more substantial come January or February.

What a let down.

Every time they over hype a storm here....it never happens.

This is a tragic fact. The best storms are the ones that pop up unexpectedly.

As a New Englander (on avg. we face 3-6" a couple times a month, sometimes more), I had to laugh when I was down there for "Snowpocalypse". I esp. enjoyed how EVERYTHING shutdown but the ABC stores!

As a Clevelander, I can remember heading into school after a snowfall of 6"-8" many times, wishing they had cancelled for the day so I could have gone sledding. In the 13 years we've live in the DC metro area we've had two snow events that have satisfied my nostalgic memories, February 2003 and January 2010. Beyond those, they're all just minor and typically under deliver. I think we even got more snow than the Northeast in 2010.

As a kid growing up in DC, the city's inability to deal with even the slightest hint of winter precipitation was one of my favorite features of living there. We got so many snow days every year. So many. Of course, this sometimes meant that they had to add extra school days in the summer to make up for all the snow days, but that never took away from the excitement of winter school cancellations. So much fun. Stay incompetent, DC.

They cancelled school here in Westchester, New York, and I was shocked. I was also disappointed that we did not get more snow. Boo!

While I was growing up in central MI we only got 3 days off for snow. I'm not exaggerating either....only 3 for a big ice storm.

Now they cancel school if it's too cold. Unreal. They sent us outside for recess no matter how cold.

Here in the midwest, unless it's a blizzard or ice storm, school is usually in session. They did cancel a few days in 2010 when we had several days of heavy snow one on top of the other.

The big problem around here is that people forget how to drive when it snows. The folks with the big trucks and SUVs think "I have 4WD, I can drive like normal." But as my son says "Four times zero traction is still ZERO." He's a tow truck operator and has been mega busy of late.

(Yes, this is the son of the plaster ceiling repair LOL)

We ended up with about 3.5" from this one. I think we were forecast to get 4-6". Some places a little to the north and west of the city got 7-9", so it was really hit or miss with this one.

I think the timing is why so many schools and workplaces chose to close yesterday. All of the forecasts had this thing hitting right at the morning rush hour, which can be dangerous on a normal day. Throw in a potentially blinding snowfall and there would have been more accidents than the emergency responders could handle, especially with the way people drive in NoVA/DC/MD.
