The Winner of the DIY Gingerbread Challenge

Our 1st annual DIY Gingerbread Challenge is complete and we have a winner to announce. But before we get to the Old Town Home Challenge, we wanted to give you an update on our little friendly neighborhood competition.

Yep, it's hard to believe but we have another year of our annual neighborhood gingerbread fun under our belts. Let me tell you, the competition was fierce, the food was wonderful, the company was engaging, and the cheer was abundant. It's no surprise we look forward to this evening each year, and as with previous years it did not disappoint.

Our gracious host Eileen had the place beautifully setup for the group's arrival. Each kit was located on the dining room table and was just waiting for everyone to get to work. After a little bit of friendly conversation and assortment of sweets and appetizers, we all got to work.

Even our good friend Kristin's plastic light up Santa made an appearance. It was a festive ambiance, that's for sure.

This year Wendy and I had a plan. We had purchased several items of "contraband" to bring to the competition. Some Golden Grams, pretzel sticks, candy canes, and Wendy's trusty cake decorating set. The plan was to start with a shingle roof using the Golden Grams and icing. I'm the trusty roofer so I got to work on the starter course.

The shingles took me FOREVER! No joke, it was probably at least an hour of work to pick through the cereal and find enough flat pieces to make a shake style roof. While I was working on the roof, Wendy was decorating the walls.

I took a few breaks during roofing to survey the competition. It seemed that the main challengers were Katie and Colin who were sitting next to us. We had loaned them our pretzels and they were making a run at a log cabin. Last year's log cabin attempted by Kristin and Brian was a bit of a failure, but this team had a better approach.

I surveyed the rest of the competition and was rather impressed with the overall progress of the group. We were moving quite slowly, to say the least.

We finally got to the assembly point of the project and spackled the whole thing together with the icing. It's seriously the most delicious building material I've ever used. Just look at that concentration.

The final step was application of the outdoor elements of the house, including the pretzel stick picket fence that I was putting together. But hey, I wasn't the only one concentrating to the fullest on the final assembly.

We took so long putting everything together that everyone else at the table was done and waiting for us. So we wrapped the whole house up and called it complete. I would have liked to do a few more items like shrubs, lights on the roof, and some icicles, but that would have taken us another hour at our rate.

Everyone put the finishing touches on their houses and we all took a step back to admire all of our handiwork (and snap a bunch of photos).

The final votes were tallied and the results announced to the group. There must have been some sort of an error, perhaps some hanging chads or malfunctioning machines, because the winners were not Wendy and me! Shocking, I know, I demand a recount! Actually, the winners of our neighborhood competition were quite deserving. It was Katie and Colin's nicely executed log cabin.

Though we may not have been the actual winners this year, we still feel like we had a pretty solid showing, and we came in second to the quaint log cabin. Here'e our finished little dwelling (complete with the beer drinking giants that apparently live in our gingerbread land. Too funny).

Not too shabby, eh? We're already looking forward to next year's competition, I think we need to start planning out our house now, and perhaps contact a few gingerbread architectural firms.

And now for the moment you've all been waiting for...

We've Got Some Great Gingerbread Challengers. Have You Entered Yet?

As we approach the final weekend of the 1st Annual DIY Ginerbread Challenge, we wanted to remind you all to get your entries in by 11:59 PM EST on Sunday December 18th. We'll be drawing a winner and announcing them on Monday's post. There's a $50 prize to Red Barn Mercantile up for grabs, and with only 11 entries so far, your odds of winning are pretty good. Don't forget to also take advantage of 15% off when you use the coupon code OLDTOWNHOME online at RedBarnMercantile.com or you mention our blog or "Wendy & Alex" when you shop in store.

But before we get to announcing the winner on Monday, we wanted to take a moment to look at several of the entries we've received already. Over the past week we've received a couple of really great houses...and some great non-houses too! Take a look at these wonderful examples of candy and baking construction.

First up is Ronnie's contribution from Drexel Hill, PA. He said it took him a week to make his masterpiece, but wow did it ever turn out great! Complete with ice skating gingerbread people, this house looks good enough to eat or live in -- you choose. I love the roof line, arched door, complementary windows, and pretty much everything about it!

Next up is Kristi and her two daughters from Alexandria, Virginia who assembled this lovely house. I'd say it's an excellent use of frosting, especially the wreath with bow above the front door. Well done ladies.

Our first non-house entry is the 17th century sunken Swedish ship, the Vasa. Complete with some bone candy to represent some of the crew that went down with the ship, this is an atypical gingerbread house that really turned out wonderfully. Wendy and I were bummed that we didn't make a stop at this ship while we were in Sweden in October, but now we can sort of feel like we got to see it. :-)

The next entry is actually from our neighborhood gingerbread competition from last week. We'll have more info on it next week, but Katie and Colin really did a great job on this log cabin gingerbread house with rosemary thatched roof. It even had a custom pretzel chimney, how great is that?

And finally is10 year old Dillon's Greek-inspired structure complete with peppermint columns and rice crispy treat stairs. The use of materials is so creative and it even has interior lighting to really make it pop! I'm a big icing fan so I'm pretty sure this one takes the cake for best tasting.

That's right. We want to see our readers' and other bloggers' best efforts when it comes to some DIY of the baked goods and candy realm. Therefore, we're thrilled to announce Old Town Home's first (and hopefully annual) gingerbread house construction challenge.

How can you showcase your mad skills you might wonder? The rules are simple.

Rules

From now through Sunday, December 18 at 11:59PM EST, readers from around the globe can submit their own gingerbread house creation.

Gingerbread houses can be made from store-bought kits (like these Gingerbread House Kits
for sale on Amazon) or baked from scratch.

Build and decorate your house. Use whatever you'd like as far as extras or special tools go, get creative with candy and supplies, and have a whole ton of fun doing it. The only restriction? All materials making up the house and decor must be edible.

Once finished, simply upload the photo of your completed candy creation to our official Gingerbread House Challenge entry page. If you'd like, include a note or story about your house and the process of building it. If you have a blog and you write about the creation of your gingerbread house/participation in the challenge, we'll gladly link back to it.

We'll highlight all of the entries that we receive so everyone can weigh in on their favorites.

On Sunday, December 18, a grand prize winner will be chosen from the submissions using random.org.

And the Winner Is...

With its charming mix of old and new, complete with an impressive stock of entertaining must haves, Red Barn can be your one stop shop this holiday season.

How would you spend it? Personally we've had our eyes on the beautiful selection of mercury glass ornaments, the Brooklyn slate cheese board, and Tatine pine-scented candles. Winner to select in store or online redemption option.
