Creating a Summer Gift Basket: The Ultimate Hostess Gift

Summertime is a wonderful season, filled with sunshine, warm weather, and my personal favorite, casual and relaxed outdoor entertaining. I'm not one to show up to a party empty handed, and while I love to bring a homemade treat or bottle of wine, there are times when I like to do something a little more fun. Which brings me to gift baskets.

I love putting together gift baskets for friends, family, and clients alike, as I feel there's no end to how creative you can be. It is a great way to celebrate the recipients' personalities, a special occasion, a holiday, or even a theme or destination (like this New Orleans inspired basket I did a few years ago).

I recently put together a summer themed gift basket for friends and clients, who are now fortunate enough to call Hawaii their home. (Can you imagine??) I wanted to give them a gift that could be enjoyed in their new home, or more likely, outdoors on the lanai. The same type of basket would also make a great birthday gift, hostess gift for a 4th of July celebration, or even just a fun surprise for a friend. So if you're looking for a good guide for a gift basket this weekend, this post is for you.

To start I hit up some of my favorite go-to stores, including HomeGoods, in search of the perfect items, including the "basket." I like to find containers that have multiple uses, and in this case, it's a casual woven serving tray that can function to easily transport drinks and food from the kitchen to an outdoor space. Metal or enamel drink tubs also work well for this type of summer theme.

I then begin to layer in items that corresponded to outdoor entertaining. When putting together a gift basket, I try to establish not only a theme, but also a color scheme. In this case, my summer/outdoor entraining basket will have a subtle nautical theme (a nod to their Hawaiian location) as well as a good mix of natural textures, neutrals, one strong accent color, and one metallic shade. Using this casual set of burlap placemats as a jumping off point, I picked a light red/coral as the accent color.

Playing off the red accent, I also included a set of dishtowels in a corresponding shade as well as a casual, rough cotton texture.

Since it's not as significant of a texture as the placemat set, it's a good bridge between the rough placemats and the rest of the basket's contents.

Keeping with the entertaining theme, I was thrilled to find this set of slate cheese markers. It also came with a little chalk pencil for proper labeling when in use. They say the best gifts are the ones you'd buy yourself, and I'm game for anything that helps get cheese from the fridge to my mouth in a well organized yet whimsical manner.

Since there's nothing quite like an outdoor setting with nearby flickering flames, I also picked up this set of handmade citronella candles. Keeping the bugs away definitely helps being outdoors, so these candles are both practical and pretty in their metallic cups.

And while I hadn't planned on including any additional candles, I spotted this nautical themed candle in the check out line, and couldn't resist adding it to the mix. I mean, who doesn't need a sea salt linen candle? Sea salt is awesome on chocolate, so why wouldn't it be a great addition to candle wax? Right? (I'm a total sucker for the impulse buys in the check out line.)

To repeat the gold of the citronella candles as well as the nautical theme I've now completely thrown myself into with my sea salt candle buy, I found these "Ahoy" paper cocktail napkins. Perfect!

For good measure, and because you can never have too many cocktail napkins (because you can never have too many cocktails), I also included this red set. They served as another great way to pick up the accent color and gave me an additional layer of colors in the basket.

With all of the items ready to go, my next step is to assembly my basket. I start by lining the bottom of the basket with padded filler, whether crumpled up tissue paper, shredded paper, raffia, or any type of materials that will help project the items as well as keep them in place. In this case I started with the soft placemats and didn't have to worry about adding anything else as filler.

I spend time arranging everything so that it's stacked with the largest items in the back and smallest items in front. This way everything is visible when you present the basket to the recipient. It's also important to hide smaller items in nooks that seem like they were set aside just for that item. For example, I kept a little hole in the lower right so I could tuck the sea salt linen candle in that opening.

Stacking in the final items really lets the basket take shape, but be sure there are no items that stick out in a particularly unwieldy fashion. The basket should be generally consistent so that wrapping it up is a little easier. I also always include a hand written note in the basket, as this adds an opportunity for that personal touch that's lacking from any mail order gift basket.

After I have everything in place, one of the final steps is to wrap the basket with clear wrap. You can pick up this wrap from party stores, and I like to keep a role with my gift wrapping supplies. I find it comes in handy for gift baskets as well as smaller gifts like home baked goodies.

In this case the size of the basket required me to cut two lengths of clear wrap. I then gathered the wrapping at the top to close up the entire contents inside of the clear wrap.

The final step is to choose a pretty ribbon to tie it all together. I didn't have the exact shade of red/coral, so I had to settle for this burnt orange velvet ribbon. I received a large supply of ribbon in a wrapping supply kit gift a few years ago, so I tend to always have something on hand. As I use up one of the ribbons I try to replace it with something comparable. In the case of this basket, a simple bow was the final touch.

In this case since the basket had to travel by plane over several days, I didn't include any liquids or perishable items. But a bottle of wine and/or food items like chocolates, crackers, dips, or assorted nuts are are also nice additions to gift baskets. If you're putting together a fourth of July basket, you could include a box of sparklers, a small American flag, or other festive items that could add to the fun and celebration of the holiday.

I love giving personalized gift baskets because it allows me to put thought and a little creativity into the gift I'm giving. It tends to be a bit more effort since you often need to shop at several different locations, and you need to think about the theme of the basket and the personalities of the recipients, but I like to think the gift giver should have as much fun giving the gift as the recipient has in receiving it, and this is how I like to accomplish this.

Do you have any favorite ways of giving gifts you can share? I'd love to hear some new suggestions that I can use in my approach.

However, hanging a level picture on the wall, or making sure a table leg is plumb is far more achievable when you have the right tool at hand. This handy torpedo level makes any quick level check job easy, and it's shock resistant body helps protect the sensitive bubbles from getting knocked out of whack.

4. Ratcheting Multi-Bit Screwdriver

While getting your partner to change their ways may be a more difficult item to tackle, getting a tool that can adapt in any situation and change quickly as needed is far more doable. This ratcheting screwdriver is an absolute must as it is completely flexible in the situation it's needed. It beats the pants off of a traditional screwdriver as you can set it to work as a traditional fixed driver, or into a tightening (righty-tighty) scenario, or loosening (lefty-loosy) scenario. This is one of the single tools I reach for most commonly when I'm working on projects around our house. And best of all, I didn't even use the obvious "screw" metaphor when relating this to Valentine's Day.

5. 8-oz. Stubby Claw Hammer

Not everything in life needs to be a complete renovation and overhaul, and sometimes you just need to hang a picture on the wall to make your significant other's eyes light up. When life doesn't require your 16 ounce hammer, why not grab this little guy that will do the job just as well. The molded grip on the hammer and appropriate balance makes this the perfect convenient tool for those little jobs around the house.

6. Powerlock 25-Foot by 1-Inch Measuring Tape

If your partner is truly ready to make sure your relationship can go the distance, you'll definitely need some way to measure it, so why not do it in 25' increments using this no-nonsense tape measure? Sometimes it's the tried and true devices that seem to work the best, and this tape does it's one job and does it well. The metal body is rugged and will stand up to abuse while ensuring no confusion on measurements, and the classic tape body design is tried and true on the job site.

7. 8 Inch Pencil Holder / Divider Scriber

Accommodating the undulations in life without panic is key to a long and happy relationship, and accommodating the undulations in floors, walls, or ceilings by first scribing and then cutting your trim to accept these irregular surfaces is key to a successful woodworking/moulding project. This simple pencil scribe will help you disguise the gaps and irregular surfaces in your projects like a pro.

8. Cushion Grip Nail Set, 3-Piece

Hey, we all fight, and there's no shame in that. The good news, using this three piece nail set tool set in your projects will allow you to always drive the nail's point, and the head, just where you need it to go without messing up the surface with unsightly hammer marks.

Making Gift Giving Memorable: The 2013 Handmade Holiday Gift Guide

The holidays represent such a special time of the year. For us, our family, our friends, and millions of other people throughout the world, the holiday season brings with it joys, good tidings, and an opportunity to give the people you care most about a thoughtful gift or two. Unfortunately, as the years have progressed, holiday gifts have tended toward the mass produced and generic, losing the sense of uniqueness and individuality we often want to present to our gift recipients. It's not for lack of trying, but sometimes due to a simple lack of known places to find unique gifts. In the sea of Etsy and online boutique shops, it's easy to get lost or overwhelmed, and before you know it you're sticking a $20 iTunes gift card you picked up at the drug store into an envelope, utterly defeated.

Here at Old Town Home we've been fortunate to meet a series of very creative, genuine, and talented small business owners that offer an array of handmade items that very well may make a perfect gift for your loved ones. These are fellow bloggers, artists, craftspeople, and friends that offer those very unique and personal items many of us will be searching for this holiday season.

Today, as part of an effort to bring back a little bit of individuality and personality to your gift giving season, as well as to shine much deserved light on some fantastic artisans, we've partnered with a few of our favorite small business friends to put together the 2013 Old Town Home Handmade Holiday Gift Guide. This guide features a collection of unique and special places where you can do some (or all) of your holiday shopping. The wonderful people we've selected all offer exceptional and unique gifts in a variety of price ranges. All items are handmade from our wonderfully creative friends and we hope you'll consider shopping with them for the people on your list. And if you happen to see something you like for yourself it might be a good time to snap it up, don't worry, we won't tell.

Without further ado, we bring you the 2013 Old Town Home Handmade Holiday Gift Guide!

Janery

Today Janery sells pillows, pet beds and personal accessories handmade in Vienna, VA. Merlin Mats and Catnip Cuddlers are machine washable pet beds that can cozy up a pet crate, protect the sofa, or hit the road as a travel pet bed.
Mary's Mini Monsters

Mary's Mini Monsters is a tribute to the little guys – our furry friends that make our lives more fun and our homes more cheerful. Animals have personality, no question, and Alexandria-based artist Mary DeStefano enjoys capturing them. Whether a whimsical smile on a dog, or a chance meeting between a leopard and a turkey, she enjoys putting these images on paper. Mary makes custom pet and animal drawings, and her favorite medium is colored pencils on heavy weight archival paper.

Plum Papaya

Plum Papaya was created so Owner Tessa Bowers could put her sewing skills to work to create for her young daughter and others. She makes several handmade "critters" like her popular mouse design. Its combination of a sweet face, crinkly ears, and soft snuggly body make it a favorite! Other critters available include a dragon, whale, platypus, penguin, an owl, and Flip the turtle, based on a kids book about bullying. Lap size quilts along with critter size blankets and pillows are also available.

As much as we love our ability to jump on a plane and head out of town to a new location, we aren't quite as free and clear as most DINKs tend to be. Though we don't have human children that require babysitters, our furry four legged babies are of the utmost importance to us and we couldn't possibly relax without knowing they are being well cared for by a loving network of friends. Sure a dinner on us or a good bottle of wine can be nice, but from time to time, depending on the caretaker and our destination of choice, we might pick up a little something that represents the local flavor of the city we've visited. We always try to theme it in some way that represents where we've been, and we also try to make sure we're getting something that the sitters tend to enjoy.
It's no secret that New Orleans is known for its vibrant cultural traditions and regional flair. From food and drink, to parties and, well, parties, there's never a shortage of excess. For the purpose of this blog post, these great things translate quite easily into the possibility of a festive and fun gift basket to express our gratitude.

For the gift basket that we put together, I wanted to be sure to include many of our personal favorites that make New Orleans a fun place to visit. We started off with a can of Cafe Du Monde's world famous Coffee and Chicory. As a large can, I was able to use this to anchor the overall gift basket.

Next, I included a box of Cafe Du Monde's world famous (yes, it really is) beignet mix. A perfect complement to the first item, it would be a shame not to have this mix paired with the coffee. If you've never had a beignet, think of a little pillow of fried heaven covered with a thick layer of powdered sugar.

With the primary portions of the basket defined, I started thinking about other items that pop into my mind when I think of The Big Easy. One of the first things that I always think about is Pat O'Brien's Hurricanes. A potent and sugary blend of alcohol and flavoring guaranteed to turn your lips red and your vision blurry, the mix they sell is another great addition to the basket.

Another sweet New Orleans treat (this one without alcohol) that goes hand in hand with the rich southern traditions of the area is the famous praline. These cookie-like confections are nothing more than sugar syrup and nuts, but they are oh so delicious. Since we already had several large items in the basket, I removed them from their box and arranged them as filler around the other items in the basket.

When you talk to someone from New Orleans, or anyone who has spent any significant time in New Orleans, there's a good chance they developed a taste for a Louisiana beer called Abita. Alex and I both like this brew quite a bit, so I figured we might as well include a bottle in the gift basket.

As I mentioned, the whole area is known for their food and drink, but nothing is quite as indicative in New Orleans cuisine as the use of their well known Cajun flavoring and spices in just about everything. These smaller packets are great items to include in the basket to add a little bit of flavor without adding too much heft.

Another local favorite in the NOLA area is Zapp's New Orleans kettle style potato chips. They have several flavors that have a very specific New Orleans flair, such as their Voodoo flavor (think Cajun sea salt and vinegar), or our favorite, Sour Cream & Creole Onion. Inclusion of this little item is was a must.

No New Orleans gift basket would be complete with a little bit of Mardi Gras sprinkled in by way of colorful beads. I won't tell you what Alex had to bare in order to be awarded a set of beads this impressive, but I can tell you one thing, it sure wasn't pretty. (I kid, I kid.) His sacrifice is my gift basket's gain, as I am able to garnish the finished basket with just the right amount of Mardi Gras flair.

Assembly of the basket is pretty straight forward. The key is to layer the items in a haphazard way that makes the basket look like it's overflowing with fun. We're not looking for orderly stacking or organization here.

We want to use the various height and heft of the items to weight the whole basket towards the back, but we also want to ensure everything in the basket is on display. No need to hide anything here, we want everything out in the open.

Layering in the items is easy, as long as you place the larger items first in the back of the basket. Then you can set the smaller or more delicate items in place towards the front. After placement of everything and a final arrangement of the decorative beads, we have ourselves a finished basket.

If desired, you can envelop the basket in clear cellophane (just like I did with my holiday treats), and top it all off with a beautiful bow. In this case a little thought and planning on our trip and a little arrangement in a nice basket at home allows us to show just how appreciative we are for our wonderful friends and their amazing job of caring for our little black Ori-Pei, Lulu. We know she can be a little high stress energy, and we want to make sure they know just how much it means to us that they gave her a wonderful place to stay and play, and ignored her ample dog hair and subtle aroma of Fritos.

Do you have any gift giving traditions when you come back from vacation? Or maybe a special way that you like to say thank you to friends and family? You know I love to see other people's ideas, so please share.

Actual Black Friday stressful mayhem - no thanks!

Today, we aim to take just a little bit of the stress out of the decisions you need to make by suggesting a few items that we like and work quite well for us.

If you’re a consistent reader of Old Town Home, you may be familiar with our Toolbox Tuesday section – posts that offer a frank review of some of our favorite tools and home improvement items with which we have firsthand experience. So, if you have a handyman (or woman) on your list who would love to expand their arsenal of DIY must haves, here’s a list of our favorite tools that we've covered in some capacity here on Old Town Home.

Stocking Stuffers – Getting Started with the Essentials

There are a handful of small and inexpensive tools and items that are absolute must haves when tackling just about any level of DIY. These tools make excellent stocking stuffers and may be just what the gift doctor ordered to get someone's renovation heart pumping.

Tape Measure/Hammer/Pry Bar

The absolute essentials. It's no surprise this trio of tools were actually some of the first we placed in our tool bucket. They represent the three most steps items in any project, planning, demolition, and construction. These are the tools we'd be essentially lost without, and are the tools we use on a daily basis. Most importantly, the selection of a good hammer and tape measure make a world of difference in your own fatigue and the tool's longevity.

Work Gloves

It took us a longer time than it should have, but now that we've been using a good quality work glove, we're never going back. These gloves save your hands from the wear and tear that comes along with so many home projects. Whether you're talking about major knuckle busting demolition, or finger pounding electrical work, a thick and form fitting set of work gloves will make both the project itself, and the aftermath, much easier on you.

Safety Glasses

"You'll shoot your eye out" has become cemented into the lore of the holidays thanks to the movie The Christmas Story, but there should be an equally effective pop culture reference when dealing with eye protection around tools. We started using these better versions of eye protection after we got sick of our flimsy and scratched glasses. The improved plastic, better fit, and quality eye protection without bulk make them so comfortable to wear that I've noticed Alex forgetting to take them off (and sitting there watching TV with them on). If only Ralphie had been wearing some of these glasses, he probably would have been able to shoot Black Bart with no ill deflection effects.

Utility Knives

Alex swears by his utility knives...all of them. He's lost his utility knives so many times and later found them that he has at least three different knives that he uses on various projects. Truth be told, he loves all three. You can't go wrong with any of the knives we link to below. We know because we own all of them and have put them through their paces. He just recently picked up the Kobalt value pack of three knives because they were on the "special" rack at the store. He's a sucker for good marketing. While the other knives are all retractable blade knives, this new set also folds down for more compact storage. I think these will be the knives we will end up taking with us when we need to use them somewhere away from home.

Tool Bucket Organizer

Organizing your tools in a portable manner that lets you see what you've got is a tall task. Most tool boxes are either too big or layer your tools up too much. This 5 gallon bucket sleeve turns the extra bucket you may already have into a versatile, easily to carry, and organized tool storage device. Just slip this sleeve over a bucket and start filling the pockets and pouches with beautiful tool awesomeness. If you're looking for a great gift for a new DIYer, get this sleeve and a few small tools to give them a jump start on the rest of their hand tool collection. Personally, I gave this to Alex as a Christmas gift just before we moved into our house, and it's still in use almost a decade later.

Ladder

A ladder is one of those items most don't often think of as a tool, but that opinion typically changes the first time you need to do something that's just out of reach from your standing position on a wobbly dining room chair. The ladder we use most often is an aluminum folding ladder that can be configured in one of many positions for the task at hand. Whether we're scaling the back wall of the house, or just changing a higher light bulb, this ladder has been an important tool in our household in all of its many fold-able ways.

Painting Essentials

Good paint and good supplies are the key to a good looking paint job. I can't say that in a more clear or concise manner. A few extra bucks on high quality paint supplies, from paint brushes to roller covers, will save you hours of effort from trying to correct mistakes or a bad looking finish. Besides, wouldn't you rather be able to sit back and enjoy a job well done rather than spend your time picking fuzz or bristles out of your paint jobs? To me, this is a no brainer. Though there are many brands and styles out that that range from inexpensive to quite pricey, we prefer to use Purdy brand supplies. They've worked well for us and have been long lasting.

Paint Removal Tools

If you're doing any old home restoration, or if you're looking to use any salvaged items from antique stores, there's a good chance you'll be needed some or all of these indispensable tools. From heavy duty scrapers to intricate dental tools that will allow you to get into the tiniest of details, a full range of tools is a must have. These are the tried and true hand tools that we seem to use on just about every project. No gimmicks or promises of miracle paint removal, just a few tools that make a very hard task just a little bit easier.

Nail Pulling Pliers

A stubborn nail is a pain, and there's few general purpose tools we've found for pulling nails that work better than a set of end cutting pliers. Best of all, they are a general purpose tool used for everything from electrical work to those general instances where you just need to nip the end of of something.

Carpenter's Pencil

Tucked behind your ear or in your shirt pocket, there are few tools that can be used in as many ways as the standard issue carpenter's pencil. We buy in bulk and stick with the traditional wood style that is as tried and true as they come. Beyond the pencil, you'll need to pick up a good sharpener. A blog commenter recommended this Keson carpenter's pencil sharpener sharpener and I've never looked back. The sharpener is a bit more expensive than most, but it will save you so much time and effort, not to mention wasted pencils, that the extra money is well worth the charge.

Lil' Ripper Stripper

This is one of those tools that once you have it you don't know how you completed electrical projects without it. Alex picked it up on a whim, and we have both loved it ever since. This little hand tool strips the jacket from Romex, gives you a cutting guide, and allows you to put a perfect curl on the end up your wires. This is the absolute perfect stocking stuffer for that electrical enthusiast or up and coming DIYer that always seems hard to shop for.

Mid Priced Items to Take Your Toolbox to the Next Level

If you're feeling pretty good about your workshop, or you know someone who's already been doing their fair share of DIYing but wants to get just a little more into it, these tools and supplies are a great next step.

Shop Vac

This "tool" is one of the best investments we've ever made, hands down. More specifically, the use of a shop vac in combination with drywall dust filter bags and a HEPA filter, it may be a bit dramatic of me to say, but it's probably saved our marriage. Alex hooks the shop vac up to just about any significant dust creating tool, and this combo does an amazing job of keeping the dust to a minimal level, even when sanding joint compound. We've completed many tasks that would have otherwise left the whole house coated in a fine layer of film, but we've needed little more than a quick local dusting after wrapping up the project. Do yourself or your cleanliness challenged spouse or DIY friends a favor and give this gift. It's the gift that keeps on giving...in marital bliss.

Orbital Sander

As one of our first tool purchases, we had no idea the extent of use this little dynamo would get over the years. With all of the paint stripping we've done, woodworking, and general cleaning up of rough surfaces, I feel like the buzz from this sander is a near constant in our household. We've used it so much that we've replaced the sanding pad twice, yet the motor keeps running. We can absolutely recommend this style and brand of sander, without a doubt.

Pancake Compressor

We use our compressor constantly. From finish nailing to blowing up our party pool, it's a tool we typically use on a weekly basis. The pancake shape and small size makes it portable, but the capacity is plenty for everything we've needed. Alex hopes to even expand on its use in the coming weeks/months by using is to drive a paint sprayer.

Dado Blade

This is another example of a tool we didn't know just how much we needed it until we bought it. Now, Alex uses it on just about every woodworking project. It makes short work of cutting a groove in wood for strong and long lasting slot joinery. The blade we have is a good entry level blade for cutting dados, and one that is well worth the price tag.

Alex has been talking this tool up quite a bit lately, and for good reason. The biscuit joiner is one of those tools that both make life easier and make your projects look better and more professional. It allows you to join two pieces of wood as one in a nearly seamless manner. It really came in handy when we installed our new IKEA butcher block counters this summer.

Kreg Pocket Hole Jig

Though we do love our biscuit joiner, sometimes everything needs a pocket hole or two. When we started working with pocket holes many years ago, we bought this full kit to make our lives easier. It comes with all of the essential pieces necessary to cut pocket holes in a jig, or with a clamp on-site. It includes the necessary drill bit, square head screw bits, and even comes with a few screws to get you started.

Jig Saw

A good jigsaw is hard to find. Trust us, we know. After tiring of the poor and splinter filled cuts from our first jigsaw, Alex did a ton of research on the best jigsaw without totally breaking the bank. What he found was a simple answer to a difficult question. "What jigsaw to get?" Of course, get the jigsaw that This Old House's Norm Abram uses! Norm is Alex's idol, and anything that's good enough for Norm will absolutely be good enough for us.

Big Ticket Items for Those Who Have Been Very Good This Year

At the top level of our list are the items reserved for those that have been very good this year. These are the items that carry the biggest price tags, but are absolutely key to some of the more involved and in depth projects the hardcore DIYer will encounter.

Router

Whether you're trying to round over the edge of something small, or if you're trying to add a decorative edge onto butcher block counter tops, a good router is an absolutely essential piece of any woodworker's shop. We love our router and I've seen, first hand, Alex work a little bit of magic with it. The best thing about the router we have is its versatility and ability to work with standard size jigs. Do yourself a favor and invest in a good router.

Table Saw

If a DIYer doesn't yet own a table saw, they're doing a lot of work the hard way. A table saw makes short work of cross cuts, rips, angles, and a myriad of other functions. The table saw we purchased a few months after we moved into our home has been a wonderful workhorse of a tool, and one we would be lost without. The more complex projects require a tool like a table saw, and the intermediate tasks are typically made easier with it. Though our specific version is no longer available, I love the Jet brand for saws. A good table saw is easily worth it's cost, but it's important to know what you're buying based on your specific needs. The Jet saw we use has not let us down, and we can absolutely recommend the brand. Here are two comparable saws to the one we have. The job site saw is very similar to ours, but not on a base, and the workshop saw is basically the next version up from ours.

Miter Saw

Our sliding arm compound miter saw was one of our very first "big ticket" tool purchases. We knew we'd need it to install crown molding, and we also knew we'd need it for a million and one other projects. We decided to spring for many of the bells and whistles available. Sliding action, guide laser, soft start, compound action, you know, the works. It has been one of the best tool decisions we've made since owning our house. Alex reports that it has worked flawlessly since our initial purchase, has not needed any significant re-calibration or alignment, and has cut like a hot knife though butter since day one (his words). There are many options out there for a good miter saw, but we like the one we went with, that's for sure.

Benchtop Mortiser

This is what we consider a "luxury" tool. We've been doing a fair amount of mortise and tenon joinery over the last few years and this little modified drill press has been a life saver. It's a purpose built tool for cutting mortises and it takes the pain and uncertainty out of attaching an unreliable jig to a drill press. It takes up a bit of room in a shop, but the perfectly square and true mortises that it cuts are worth the sacrifice.

Belt Sander

Alex caved and finally purchased a belt sander least year after abusing his random orbit sander for many years. The belt sander makes short work of the items the orbital sander would take hours to complete. Once we took and plunge and made this purchase, we regretted not doing it much sooner. It would have made some of our more arduous tasks much simpler, and would have saved quite a bit of Alex's cursing.
